About 13 to 14 million windshields are replaced every year in the United States. Why? The most common reasons are damage caused by debris flying into windshields, vandalism, and collisions. Windshield replacement is a skill that requires extensive training and proficient knowledge of proper installation materials and their use. Many facilities that offer windshield repair also offer windshield replacement, but both repair and replacement carry with them certain risks that every consumer should be aware of.

All new motor vehicle manufacturers are required to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) on auto glass before offering vehicles for sale in the United States. Unfortunately, comparable safety standards specifically for windshield replacement have never been formally drafted. However, it is recommended that customers familiarize themselves with the FMVSS standards and/or the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard (AGRSS.com) and insist that their replacement windshield be installed in congruity with those standards. Though there is no legal requirement to adhere to these standards, in so doing you are essentially getting a replacement windshield that is “good as new.” When it comes to the safety of yourself and your passengers, this should be a very high priority indeed.

If you find that you absolutely must get your car windshield replaced, make sure your windshield installer:

* Removes the old urethane to approximately a 1/16″ depth

* Cleans and primes the windshield glass and the vehicle pinchweld

* Wears gloves to prevent any possible contamination of the materials used in the windshield replacement

* Uses new urethane adhesive (not butyl tape or silicone)

* Checks for the presence of a passenger side airbag and uses urethane that is adequately rated for the job

* Discusses with you how long you will need to wait before the vehicle can be driven

* Reviews the “do’s and don’ts” of your vehicle’s operation during the adhesive curing period

Auto glass work of this nature is very specialized work, and is not something just anyone can do. Automotive windshield repair should be performed only by someone you trust, and who stands behind every aspect of their work. Don’t make light of the fact that your car’s windshield is an integral feature of the safety of your vehicle. Don’t leave something as important as auto glass replacement [http://lasertargeted.com/glassrepair/auto-glass-repair-replacement.html] to anyone who has not been trained in what is required to conform to the FMVSS.

One company in particular has developed quite a reputation for excellent auto glass repair and replacement work. In fact they pretty much pioneered the entire industry. NOVUS will replace your car windshield glass or if you prefer, they will repair it as well. The company offers a complete line of glass installation and car care products that include the highest quality urethane adhesives, glass and paint primers/preps and cleaners for vehicles and technicians. NOVUS has been awarded more U.S. patents for windshield repair than all the rest of the windshield repair industry combined. The company has been for over 30 years, and remains to this day, the auto glass repair industry’s leading research and development pioneer.

By: Kathy Hildebrand

About the Author:

Replacing a windshield can be very costly. Depending on the model of vehicle you drive, windshields can cost up to $1,000. Windshields in cars today have inserts of all kinds – heating coils, radio antenna, satellite antenna and more. These inserts drive up the cost of the windshield considerably, leaving replacement an extreme expense.

There is good news – you can get glass coverage included on your auto insurance policy that will cover repairs and replacements of your windshield, and if you have an expensive windshield, this is a viable option.

Auto glass insurance claims can differ from policy to policy, so it is important that you understand how your insurance coverage is set. Many auto glass insurance policies allow for free repairs of chips and cracks in your windshield, thusly offsetting the cost of expensive replacements.

Most auto glass insurance policies will require you to pay a deductible for windshield replacement, a set amount that you pay and then insurance kicks in for the rest of the cost to replace your windshield. While you will still have to pay some money out of pocket, in most cases, it’s not nearly as expensive as paying for the replacement fully.

With your auto glass insurance policy, you will need to be careful though. Before you get auto glass insurance, there are a few things you need to find out. Firstly, find out from an auto glass repair shop how much a windshield will cost to replace in your vehicle.

Find out how much a factory windshield costs and a standard windshield. Then find out if your windshield could be repaired (some can not be repaired). You will also need to find out how much your insurance will cost you to add auto glass coverage (in yearly premium) and how much your deductible will be.

Most vehicle owners replace their windshield once per year. The total cost of your yearly premium coupled with your deductible is how much money you will pay each year for a replacement windshield. If that cost is higher than a replacement windshield paid for out of pocket, then it is more worth it to bypass the auto glass insurance all together.

Your insurance rates will escalate as you use them, including for auto glass replacement. However, many insurance companies will pay for free repairs, you will have to gauge on your own whether the monthly premium is worth the free repair (most repairs cost around $50.00).

If you need to have your windshield replaced or repaired, contact your insurance agent to find out if they prefer one auto glass repair shop over another and how the claim will be covered. Your insurance agent can give you the name of a Houston Texas auto repair or replacement shop that you can take your vehicle to have your windshield repaired.

It is best if you do some math and request the input of your insurance agent when deciding on whether or not to purchase auto glass insurance for your vehicle. In some cases, paying the premiums for glass coverage is not a viable option – if you will end up paying more in premiums than for the cost of replacement, then auto glass insurance is not for you.

Catching a chip or crack early is best as well for you, and your pocket book. Having a chip or small windshield crack repaired is cost effective and gives you back integrity in your windshield.

In most cases, the repair can hardly be seen, and in some cases, the repair is nearly invisible. Windshield repair is a cost-effective solution to windshield cracks and chips – staving off the need to replace the windshield completely.

If you have ever had the unfortunate mishap of something such as a rock, stone, or pebble chipping or cracking your windshield you know how frustrating a situation like this can be. Many people may think that the only option available is to have the windshield replaced, but this is not the case. The option of repairing the break is available so that the chip or crack is kept from spreading, therefore salvaging the windshield and costing much less than a full replacement.

Windshield repairs employ advanced technology to prevent a chip or crack from spreading across the surface of the front glass. The process begins with making sure that the area is clean and then filling the damaged area with a special adhesive. The technician will then cure the adhesive resin with ultraviolet light. If the technician that is repairing the surface is skilled in the trade then the strength and appearance of the windshield should be fully refurbished. There is sometimes a small deficiency in clarity where the crack once was, but most of the time the blur is not even visible. If the area that is being worked on is not clean and dry then it is possible for particles of dirt, or whatever may be on the surface, to become trapped in the in the glass, causing the specks to be permanently detectable. If the area is not dry then it may cause the area to crack again.

It is extremely important to make sure that the company that you will be using for this procedure is highly recommended and skilled in the repair of windshields. If the technician that is making the repair to your vehicle has not been properly trained then it is possible for a dangerous situation to arise once the vehicle is back in your hands. The windshield is one of the most important safety features that a car possesses. It helps to hold the roof of the car up so that it doesn’t cave in during an accident and it also protects the driver and the passengers of the car. If you don’t have a proper windshield or the proper person repairing it there can be some major problems.

Once you have chosen a professional windshield repair company they will make your experience as convenient and painless as possible. Most reliable companies will come to you to repair your vehicle. Whether you are at home or work they can come and complete the procedure while you go about your day.

Having your front glass repaired as opposed to having it replaced can save you a large sum of money. Many insurance companies will agree to pay for repairs and will often waive the deductable.

Making sure that you are driving with a safe, clarified, solid windshield can make the difference in your driving experience.

Most people have no idea that cracks, chips and scratches in windshield glass can be repaired and restored to new again at a huge savings over replacement. How do I know this? By being observant. I see probably 20 to 30 vehicles with chips, scratches and cracks every day. These all affect your vision and safety. It is a proven fact that windshield scratches, nicks and chips can cause added glare and increase or add blind spots while driving. According to the Michigan State Police, a windshield must be free of any imperfections caused by road debris as it will greatly impede vision and driver safety. Many windshield problems like cracks, scratches and nicks can easily be fixed or repaired without replacement.

Windshield repair was started as a sideline business and has grown into a nationwide aftermarket and additional service. It can be found at almost every used car dealership. There are outside crews that provide services like windshield repair, scratch and paint, headlight repair and restoration and paintless dent removal. All you have to do is ask a used car salesperson or the used car manager about it. If they do not have someone there ask whom they would recommend. All used car dealers use windshield repair instead of replacement, especially since the average windshield replacement is now over $400 and the average windshield repair is only around $25.

Windshield repair may even be free as your insurance company will probably wive the deductible if you go with a repair instead of a replacement. It saves them lots of money and it improves your driving safety. A windshield repair when professionally done is just as safe as a new or replaced windshield. It also looks a million times better.

Basically a windshield repair squeezes acrylic resin into the blemish by a vacuum that seals out air and moisture. It is then exposed to UV light which hardens the resin and it dries to a crystal clear. When properly done most repairs cannot even be seen by a trained eye and it will stop the spreading or worsening that usually occurs with most cracks. Most small blemishes like nicks, scratches, and cracks can be repaired. Long or spidered cracks that can cover the whole windshield cannot be economically fixed and the integrity of the windshield glass is gone so repair would be futile. A trained windshield repair technician could easily tell you if your windshield is repairable or not.

Scratches are a little different. They will use a glass polishing kit which is made only for glass. This will grind the glass level to the bottom of the scratch and then through different grades of glass polish optical clarity will be brought back. As a final step the best detailers will wax the glass for you. This, when properly done, will have a better effect at removing water and rain then advertised window treatments and it lasts ten times longer (waxing the glass also stops squeaky windshield wipers).

Windshield repair should be professionally done and is beyond the scope of most weekend home repair jobs. Due to its effect on your vision and driving safety and being that the price is only around $25 it is best to see a technician trained in windshield repair.

In the event of an accident, the windshield of your vehicle is just as important as the seatbelts, airbags, and other safety features of your vehicle. Windshields are specially constructed to provide support and integrity to the vehicle’s passenger compartment, and to prevent as much injury as possible to the occupants. For this reason, it is important to make sure that your windshield is structurally sound and not compromised in any way.

How are windshields made?

Windshields are constructed from laminated glass. This laminated glass is composed of two or more layers of glass, with a thin plastic sheet in between. This transparent sheet of plastic is actually called polyvinyl butyrate, or PVB, and is fused between the layers of glass in an adhesion process which utilizes pressure and heat to bind the layers together.

The PVB film keeps the glass from shattering in the event of an accident. On impact, most of the glass is kept from entering the vehicle’s cabin, and can even act as a retainer to keep objects, including you, inside the vehicle.

Auto Glass Repair

Modern windshields can contain a plethora of features and technologies within the windshield proper. Some of these features commonly include heating mechanisms, sensors, tints, coatings, and radio antennas. They may even contain more sophisticated features including heads-up-displays (HUD) and satellite uplinks. With these kinds of features, it is not hard to understand why windshields can be expensive. This is also why windshield repair is a common solution to cracked, scratched, and damaged windshields.

During a windshield repair, the technician uses a specially formulated resin, injecting it into the damaged area of the glass. The resin is then cured, restoring the windshield’s integrity, and polished to restore the clarity of the glass.

Auto Glass Replacement

13-14 million windshields are replaced annually in the United States, most commonly caused by flying debris, vandalism, and collisions. It is important to realize that windshield replacement is a complicated, challenging process that should only be performed by properly trained professionals.

Replaced windshields must be perfectly positioned and installed as to not compromise the integrity of the vehicle’s cab. The windshield provides essential support to the passenger compartment in the event of an accident, especially in rollovers. Think of the windshield as the keystone of an arch.

Auto Glass Service

Whether needing repair or replacement, it is vital to hire a qualified professional to perform the required task that is needed. All newly manufactured vehicles are required to comply with standing FMV safety standards for auto glass before being sold in the United States. The same guidelines do not apply to replacement windshields. National Glass Association (NGA) certified technicians should provide an installation that is comparable to these standards upon request.
